We could carry walkie-talkies or something similar when out on the library floor so we can be called upon if needed or call for back-up ourselves when having difficulty dealing with an enquiry. This would be particularly useful in dealing with troublesome students and, indeed, the mere sight of walkie-talkies may improve student behaviour if they think we have recourse to back-up/security.

I think its a good idea- depending on the size of the library.
You can pick up a low cost set like the motorola XTR which comes with a earpiece and microphone so you can avoid the noise issue. which should be ok for an office style environment
